There is considerable evidence that mothers’ physical, chemical and psychosocial exposures at work can influence child development in utero, increasing the risk of problems that could influence childhood and later life health (Wigle, 2008). Additionally, women who are underemployed or involuntarily work part-time may also be at greater risk of delivering low birth weight infants (Dooley & Prause, 2005).

That might look like someone accessing mental health resources on Search, finding a match for a skin condition with Google Lens, getting useful health insights about irregular heart rhythms or powering our most accurate heart rate tracking on Fitbit.

Second, the EHR provides us with new opportunities to consider how to document SDH-related assessments, integrate complementary data streams, and recognize population-level patterns. With these new capabilities, are there shared metrics on which obstetricians, neonatologists, and primary care pediatricians can collectively track and hold one another to account? How should metrics be shared across the clinical–community continuum (e.g., with parent advisory boards, health departments, legal aid societies, school districts, city councils)? How can we ensure that such metrics add value and are not driven by enshrined biases? Third, as we move toward action, how can we maintain ongoing stakeholder engagement, a view that stretches across the life course, and strategies that pair rigor with the reality of the real world? How can we translate this engagement across the clinical–community continuum into lasting, value-added partnerships? And finally, what is the role of the health-care system in moving toward community well-being or toward a dismantling of generations-old structural issues at the heart of unjust health outcomes?

Texas lawmakers in 2017 passed House Bill 10, a law that strengthens existing federal protections for mental health and substance use care provided through private insurance. In 2021, the Texas legislature passed House Bill 2595, designating October as Mental Health Condition and Substance Use Disorder Parity Awareness Month, but more importantly, created a complaint portal where Texans can report problems with coverage to the state Department of Insurance. Texas 988 centers in 2021 answered 60,000 calls, a 92 percent increase compared to 2018. The average state call line receives 3,300 calls per month; Texas gets 14,000 calls per month. In May of this year, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline answered 11,502 total contacts from Texas. According to a 2021 survey by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 8.22% of Texans 18 or older had a major depressive episode, 5.33% had serious thoughts of suicide, and 1.78% made suicide plans in the past year.

Physicians can provide valuable insights about sleep health and hygiene and, if needed, perform tests to evaluate for a sleep disorder. Newborns and infants require as much as 15 to 17 hours of sleep per night, whereas teenagers can usually get by with eight to ten hours. Adults between the ages of 18 and 64 generally need seven to nine hours.

Being present and mindful while we eat is another effective tool that can combat cravings or overeating. “Try to notice the way your food smells, tastes, and feels as you eat it,” Dr. Fernandez-Turner says. And take note of how the nutritious snacks and meals make you feel afterward. Some people who move to a mostly plant-based diet, for instance, often notice that their energy and focus are sustained throughout the day. It may take days or weeks before you start to feel the mood-boosting effects of a better diet. Lasting transformation doesn’t happen overnight, but the healthy choices you make each day build on each other. In time, you’ll see the positive results in both your mind and body.
